{Family} Yoga for Service

Because you've seen our tagline and perhaps our mission statement, you know that we are Yoga for Service. But what the heck is Yoga for Service?

It is our take on a give-back model that keeps our business active and involved in our community. It means that every single yoga class we offer is either giving 15% back to local charities and non-profits, or perhaps even ALL proceeds, as is the case with Family Yoga.

Family Yoga is something I have been teaching for years and always as a donation-based class. Last fall we participated in a nation-wide effort through the Give Back Yoga Foundation to raise dollars to support their efforts with veterans, body image issues, and in prisons. This year with Grounded Sky, however, we are taking a much more local focus and dedicating all of our donations to hunger-based groups right here in our community. That's why our first Family Yoga of 2017 was aimed at collecting non-perishables for the Food Pantry.

And so it will be for the rest of the year. Whenever we hold a Family Yoga event, we'll pick a local hunger-based project and raise either donations or dollars to help support their efforts and missions. There is such a great need here (as there is in many places) and we are happy to be using the tool of yoga to bring families together for a fun time while also raising both awareness and funds for this cause.

How do the events work? Well, as of right now, we are taking a little tour of churches in Hastings, holding class in gyms and open spaces, and inviting all shapes and sizes of families (targeted at those with Littles ages 3-10yo) to join us. We work on breathing techniques, practice poses & flows, play some yoga games, &, of course, do partner poses. It is mildly controlled chaos and it is GREAT!

Sometimes we are able to use the spaces with no charge, while others require rental fees, which we totally understand. If you would ever like to help us offset those costs, you can contribute to the funds via our donation option that can be found in our shop page. We promise that any donations received will go to cover rental fees or directly out to the local organizations we support.

If you are local and want to get your own family, friends, and church involved, we'd love to work with you! Our host churches get to help decide which hunger-based program to support and we will assist you in spreading the word about the event; just shoot us an email of interest and we will make it happen.

As for our next event, it's happening on Earth Day (awesome!). All are welcome, and we can't wait to see just how much good we can give throughout the rest of 2017!
